Ear Cleaning Technique
Please all familiarise yourselves with this cleaning technique. This is how we recommend to clean, whether treating an infection or weekly maintenance cleaning.
This is a post I wrote for the Shar Pei groups regarding ear cleaning. The same principle will apply to any breed. This is the technique you should adopt to get the best results from your product.
I've found since selling Zymox, that although most Shar Pei owners know that we need to clean their ears regularly, most people do not know how to do it properly. This is not a criticism of anyone, at the end of the day, unless you have been told or shown, how would you ever know!! I was shown this procedure by Iain Fraser, my Shar Pei specialist vet, when my first Shar Pei suffered an ear infection. I have never had any ear problems since adopting this cleaning technique and regime.
I fill the ear CANAL with plenty of solution, then grab the canal between my 2 fingers and thumb, I then massage (squash) the ear canal (As much of it as you can physically feel). You should hear the solution squelching in the ear. I massage for approximately 1 minute. I can do both sides at once but at first you might have to do one at a time. The dirt sticks to the lining of the ear canal, and this is how it builds up. By squashing the ear canal, it breaks up the dirt that is clung to the inside, then when the dog shakes, the dirt comes out. I then wipe out the dirt and excess cleaning solution.
It is a little strange at first when you squash the ear canal, but you will not hurt them. Some of them actually enjoy it!!!
The area circled in the diagram below is the area that needs massaging. The pictures below will show you whereabouts you will find this area on your dog. You will feel it go from like a funnel to a tube. Massage it all and try to get as low down the ear canal as possible, as so to break up as much dirt as you can.
It may take a good couple of cleans to get rid of all the dirt, but once it is clean and you are no longer getting any dirt out, you can change to weekly cleaning.
